Hacienda Luisita: Just Another Carrot at the End of a Stick

It’s that time of the year again when we reflect on and honor the working class. Less than two weeks before May 10 and election fever is getting hotter than El Niño. I’d like to share my hubby’s thoughts on the upcoming elections. The way I see it, the government is serving the public interest and in this case the citizens are the customers of people in office.

A guest post by Mon Flores, an activist of social justice.

According to the surveys, Noynoy is going to be our next president.  Personally, I believe surveys during elections are just propaganda tools to influence voters. And now that Noynoy has been put on top of that heap, whoever is on top becomes more visible and subject to closer scrutiny. Specially now that mudslinging is coming from all sides of the arena, it’s only normal that all kinds of libelous accusations are deemed acceptable this close to the polls. In this digital age, almost anyone has instant access to information about public figures be it legit or black propaganda.  In the case of Noynoy, sifting through all the bad press he’s being accused of, most of it he has easily addressed as either irrelevant to his capacity of being a great leader or outright false. But all it takes is one. One truth that he cannot deflect with his self assumption of  benevolence. And that truth is Hacienda Luisita.

If you have to think hard why this matters, then you most probably don’t know what’s been happening in Tarlac for the past 2 decades or so.  If you really want to know all the nitty gritty details, just search Hacienda Luisita on YouTube and you should see that something is amiss here. Being involved in the Hacienda Luisita massacre should never be taken lightly.

After a few minutes of googling the real cause of the labor disputes, there’s really not much to consider regarding this issue. Simply put, Noynoy’s lolo promised to give all the land to the farmers after a few years. That was part of the bank loan agreement.

The Cojuangcos did not deliver on that promise. They used technical legal maneuverings to keep that from happening. Even Noynoy knows that the land rightfully belong to the farmers. The Cojuangcos even claim that the property is buried in debt. Clearly, sugar is profitable right? The Cojuangcos would not be where they are now if it wasn’t. How can you go wrong with 6000 hectares of arable land?

So what does all this have to do with Noynoy’s capacity of leading our country?

Noynoy can’t even pacify the employees in his own backyard. Isn’t being president basically a CEO job? If this is so, then can you imagine how Noynoy’s administration will treat the little people all throughout the nation once he is in charge?

I think the Cojuangcos will never relinquish Hacienda Luisita because this will become a precedent to all haciendas nationwide and the hacienderos do not want that to happen. Noynoy’s plans for Hacienda Luisita to give the land to the farmers has been on the shelf for over 30 years.

Ever since Noynoy proclaimed his candidacy, his critics have urged him to solve the Hacienda Luisita issue. Take a few moments to analyze the history of CARP and it’s obvious that it is merely a carrot at the end of a stick dangled in front of the donkey farmers.

See it for what it really is, this is how the Cojuangcos manage their business in Tarlac.  How can Noynoy manage the nation when there is so much strife in his own backyard?

Enjoy your labor day weekend.
